What is the safest and most reliable way to face and experience death? Remembering death is a good start, but there is a possibility that the thought doesn’t turn into emotion. It is not enough to think of death, you have to feel it to be able to change yourself. Death awareness shouldn’t remain a philosophy, it has to be a living experience. Thinking uses the rational mind, but you have to go beyond that to trigger these changes.
Remember, the ego dwells in the mind, and the last thing the ego wants is to die. So, you have to reach the irrational part of the mind, the emotional center, and go beyond the „safe zone”. As soon as the thought of death starts to turn into an emotion, fear starts to arise. This is exactly the fear of death that you have been trying to avoid and deny until now. The ego may get so much afraid, that it turns back from the experience. If it does, the power of death will never work.
By only thinking about death, you may not be able to experience it. But by experiencing it through a dangerous situation, you put your life at risk. The solution is to trick your mind that you are going to die in the next moment, but remaining in safety in the meantime. The idea has to penetrate through the critical mind to the emotional mind. The best method to get through the conscious mind to the subconscious mind is hypnosis.
What I simply did was that I combined hypnosis with death. After getting into a relaxed state, I guide you to imagine the moment of your death, then you meet your relatives at the funeral, go through a life review, and finally your body is burnt in a crematorium. You disintegrate yourself from your body, your emotions and your mind, and become aware of what is left.
In every guided meditation, the background music can make or break your state. I managed to find a dramatic but soft and meditative music to get you into the mood. This relaxing music will guide your brain to a state of deep meditation. I even added some sound effects to help your imagination.
Breathing is another significant factor that effects the state of consciousness. Breathing is deeply connected to thinking. For example, when you stop your breath, your thoughts stop, too. You can find various breathing techniques in spirituality, most of which I already tried myself. For the death meditation, I chose one called the „death breathing”. It was advised by Shiva, and it can be found among the 112 meditations of Osho. This exercise prepares you to enter death, by connecting breathing in with life, and breathing out with death.
