People usually don’t like to speak about death, they avoid it like the plague. They think that by mentioning it, they paint the devil on the wall. They believe that they invite Death by speaking his name. But this is just a superstition. What they are really afraid of is their own suppressed fear of death. Even the thought of death is scary because they are reminded of their own death. Instead, they want to keep themselves in the illusion that they will live forever.

Death may be a taboo in the West, but not in the East. In India, they burn the dead openly on cremation grounds and have great respect for old people. While, in the West, we try to hide the signs of aging with face creams, we put our grandparents to elderly homes and cover the dead in coffins. Somehow, we believe that death is not natural, and should not happen. We cannot accept it, so we make every effort to deny it.

If I asked you, you would probably say that you were not afraid of death. You are not afraid consciously, but you are terrified unconsciously. You are afraid even to think about it, that is why you don’t even think about it. You say you will deal with it in its own time, but then it will be too late.

Your whole life is unconsciously built on the fear and denial of death, and it defines you beyond your comprehension. You unconsciously do everything you can, not to be afraid of death, and most of the time, you succeed. But your success is really a failure, and you don’t even realize what you are missing.

We are always afraid of the unknown, and death is one of the biggest mysteries of life. So what I am suggesting may seem radical and contradictory at first, but I can assure you that it is worth the effort. Start thinking and contemplating about death! The goal is not to be morbid, but to be more aware. I am not obsessed with death, I am obsessed with life. But the path to a full life leads through the awareness of death.
