Hearing is the second most used sense after seeing. Even as a small fetus in the womb, you can already hear noises and sounds. Hearing is always connected with movement because sound is created when something moves and creates vibrations in the air that you can perceive. You are surrounded by various sounds all day long, but you pay little attention to them. But consciously listening to the sounds is one of the most effective techniques to bring you to the present moment.

Do you hear the birds chirping outside when you are listening to me? If not, what other noises do you hear? Your environment almost always contains some kind of noise or sound, complete silence is very rare. You have to become more sensitive to these sounds, notice them continuously. First, it is easier to try with all other senses closed, and later you can practice in normal situations, during everyday life.

Sit down or lie down, and close your eyes. Take a deep breath, relax your muscles and become silent. Start noticing the sounds and noises around you. From which direction do they come from? How far away is their source? What could cause the sound, what is happening? After a while, stop guessing and focus on simply sensing. Don’t guess what is happening, don’t infer anything, don’t start thinking. This is very important. Concentrate on the pure sensation of hearing itself.

You will soon realize that you are the center of every sound. All the sounds that you are hearing meet in your center. Your center is completely silent, otherwise you couldn’t hear anything from the noise inside. You can only hear sound when there is silence in the background. You can only see light with darkness behind. Focus on this center, because this silent center is you.
