What Is Intuition?

The dictionary defines intuition the following way: a natural ability or power that makes it possible to know something without any proof or evidence: a feeling that guides a person to act a certain way without fully understanding why.

The word tuition in itself means teaching or instruction, and in Middle English it used to also mean looking after, guarding. Let’s put this word together with “in” to get the full meaning. So, intuition is a teaching that comes from within, that is guarding and protecting you.

It is very important to differentiate intuition from other modes of cognition. Belief is a type of knowledge that also comes without any proof or evidence, but from outside. Thinking – logical deduction – is a form of information that comes from inside, but which is based on proof and evidence.

The problem with logic is that its underlying assumptions are often false. And even when you can take the basic premises for sure, the deductions can often be wrong. It is impossible to predict the future, because like Maharaji said, one single outcome has infinite reasons. From the other part of the equation, quantum physics suggests that the future has unlimited possibilities.

However strange this may sound at first, intuition is a better judge than thinking. I am sure you also had many situations in your life, when your mind stated something logical, but your heart whispered something else. When you had to decide between something that you thought to be right, and something that you felt to be right. And when you listened to your heart, you never regretted it, did you?

Society is filling your mind with its own ideas so you can serve it until the end of your life. You can decide only one thing, your free will has power only on one aspect of life, and it is this: Although you will always be a servant, it is up to you who you serve. Do you want to serve the lower consciousness of the society, or the higher consciousness of the universe?

Serving society feels like a duty, while serving your Higher Self is a bliss. Living according to your intuition is not a chore, it is more like raising a child. I cannot promise you that it is always easy, because it is not. Yet it is always fulfilling, and highly rewarding. It is a great work, yet you will never think of it as work.
